On Tuesday 15 October 2019, Bellmans are excited to offer two important watercolour works by Eric Ravilious (British, 1903-1942). Both from a local private collection, these are fine and rare examples of work by an eminent painter, designer and War Artist whose life (and artistic output) was cut tragically short when the aircraft he was in was lost off Iceland in 1942.
One entitled ‘Drought’ (1933), depicts a scene during the severe drought experienced by Southern Britain in 1933-1934.
Eric Ravilious (1903-1942), Drought, watercolour, signed and dated Sept '33, 30cm x 46.5cm £50,000-70,000
The other ‘Aerodrome’ dates from 1941 and though a light and airy composition, nonetheless is a depiction of the dark days of World War II.
Eric Ravilious (1903-1942), Aerodrome, watercolour and pencil, 45cm x 55cm. £80,000-120,000
