A Modern Grand Tour | A House on Belgrave Square - Part I

21 December 2023

The 2024 auction calendar for Bellmans is starting off with the sale of contents from a house on Belgrave Square.

Known to be one of the most prestigious addresses in the country, Belgrave Square has been famous since it’s development in the mid 19th century, commissioned by the 2nd Earl Grosvenor, late 1st Marquess of Westminster and contracted/built by Thomas Cubitt and George Basevi respectively.

Whilst the majority of properties are now embassies or headquarters for international businesses or charities, very few remain as private houses, including this house which Bellmans have been instructed to sell the contents on behalf of the current owners.

The contents are to be sold in several parts at Bellmans, and Part I includes almost three hundreds lots of fine English furniture both antique and faithful reproduction, as well as a large collection of decorative works of art and paintings in the manner of famous Impressionist and Old Master painters.

Furniture highlights of the first sale instalment include various upholstered sofas and armchairs by George Smith, Howard & Sons and Dudgeon of London as well as a large collection of carved giltwood mirrors reputedly by the renowned Dorset based cabinet maker Jonathan Sainsbury.
