Captain Richard Alsager, East India Company - Bellmans August Interiors Auction

Captain Richard Alsager brought these Chinese Export items to his home in Surrey, England around 1830. They came into his possession through his voyages around the globe as a Commander in the Maritime Service, East India Company. Nine of the fifteen voyages he undertook for the company were to China, after the last of which these items returned home with the Captain. After his retirement from sailing the high seas, Alsager was twice elected M.P for East Surrey before his untimely death in 1841. No children survived him.

These items are being offered for auction at Bellmans on the 12 & 13 August, by the great-great grandson of Captain Alsager’s nephew. More details are available on request.

Lot 1830 A pair of 19th century Chinese export black lacquer chinoiserie cabinets on stands, each with a pair of doors enclosing a graduated eight drawer interior, the stands leaf capped turn supports on claw and ball feet, 58cm wide x 131cm high. £5,000-10,000.

Lot 1935 A Chinese export gilt and black lacquer games box, early 19th century, of rectangular form raised on four paw feet, the cover gilt and painted with a figurative panel around the Alsager crest, the sides the further panels of figures in landscapes, the interior with five lidded compartments and twelve trays and including approximately 125 engraved mother-of-pearl gaming counters, the majority bearing the Alsager crest, 36cm. wide x 29cm. deep x 12cm. high. £1,200-1,500.

Lot 1940 A large and impressive Chinese famille- rose two handled vase, 19th century, of baluster form set with blue mythical beast-shaped handles, painted with women and children at leisure before a mountainous landscape, 84.5cm. high, wood stand and a matched pierced wood cover, (3). £1,500-2,500

Lot 1950 Eight Chinese wallpaper panels, early 19th century, laid onto canvas, each painted in famille-rose enamels with birds and insects amongst flowering branches, each 160cm. high, widths 2 x 93cm, 4 x 108cm., 1 x 115cm. and 1 x 141 cm., framed; also a smaller shaped panel, 148cm, by 84cm. at widest point, (9). £4,000-6,000
