FRICS - Fellow of The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors
Phil joined Bellmans as a Consultant Valuer in 2011, and is responsible for the European Ceramics and Asian Art sales. He brings with him over twenty years valuations experience, formerly working at Sotheby's Billingshurst, where he ran the European and Oriental Ceramics department, and Sotheby's London where he became the Head of European Ceramics in 2007.
A former captain of cricket and rugby at school and college, Phil now enjoys watching sport from the comfort of his sofa. He also enjoys taking his Jack Russell, George, for long walks in the Sussex countryside.
Most Memorable Moment: one of Phil’s most pleasing finds whilst at Bellmans has been a pair of mid-18th century Meissen porcelain models of squirrels modelled by J.J. Kaendler. The owner, who brought them in on a routine valuation day, had no idea of their rarity and was staggered when they sold for £45,000.
Wishful find: due to Phil’s vast range of knowledge and interests, picking one 'wishful find’ is a difficult ask, but his shortlist includes a piece of late 17th century Japanese kakiemon porcelain, an early piece of Chinese mark and period porcelain, or perhaps an unrecorded item of dated English Delftware.
