A collection of watercolours from the family of JMW Turner

10 March 2023
MICHAEL ANGELO ROOKER (BRITISH, 1743-1801)

Bellmans are delighted to be offering a collection of watercolours from the family of Joseph Mallord William Turner. The collection, which includes works by Michael Angelo Rooker and Edward Dayes as well as works attributed to Charles Parrocel, Paul Sandy and John Glover, has come from Charles Mallord William Turner whose grandfather, John Turner was JMW Turner’s uncle.

The collection also includes a drawing by Dr Thomas Monro who was principal physician at Bethlem Royal Hospital and consultant physician to King George III. As well as being an amateur artist himself he was also a keen art collector and patron to the likes of JMW Turner and Thomas Girtin, providing supper in his town house on Adelphi Terrace as the young artists sketched, which gave rise to the term 'Monro School’; this informal academy also included artists such as Peter de Wint, John Sell Cotman and William Turner of Oxford. A number of Monro's own drawings were acquired by Turner at the Sotheby's sale of his estate in 1833.

The collection will be offered in the sale of Old Master, British & European paintings on 28th March.
