IRELAND - Personal Estate Accounts of Charles Moore (1730-1822), 6th Earl and (from 1791) 1st Marquess of Drogheda. 2 folio volumes covering the years 1758 - 75, ruled for receipts & payments; overall some 300pp. used, contemp. reversed calf with unusual russia spine bands (see binding costs note at front). Having been a professional soldier the Earl, sometime member of both Houses of the Irish Parliament, held various administrative posts, e.g. Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant, Governor of Co. Meath & Queens County, & was colonel of the 18th Light Dragoons; the family seat was Moore Abbey, Monasterevin, Co. Kildare. * receipts were mostly rents & loans of various kinds, with a sprinkling of successful wagers, racing successes (from his own stable) & card winnings. The outgoings show a veritable directory of local, Dublin & some London tradesmen; books at auction (twice), (sedan) chairmens payments in Dublin - with upkeep payments for the Sackville Street House; subscriptions (Kildare Hunt, the Dublin Society, the Curragh etc.); costs detailed for some Bath visits; also (Apr. 1768) 'Mr. Pine - for painting 2 miniature pictures' £10/10/-', i.e. almost certainly Robt. Edge Pine, who worked exclusively in Ireland, & who had painted 2 members of the Baillie family with whom the Earl had dealings; loan repayments & gambling debts brook large. A detailed, intriguing record - well worthy of some close study. Illustrated.
