Studio Pottery Auction – 4 April 2019

 Bellmans Sussex announces its inaugural specialist Studio Pottery auction on Thursday, April 4th 2019.

 The sale will comprise of over 100 lots and include work by Derek Davis, a collection of pots from the studio of the late Claire Sutcliffe and pieces from the studio of Douglas Zadek.

 Derek Davis, (1926 -2008) was one of the pioneers of postwar ceramics, internationally respected for his stoneware and porcelain. He studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in the late 1940s and together with fellow student Eric Mellon formed the Hillsden Group. In 1953 Derek began to show pots at the gallery Primavera, London, owned and run by Henry Rothschild. In 1955 he moved to Arundel, Sussex and by 1960 was showing at the Victoria and Albert Museum 1963 saw him develope the sang de boeuf and aubergine glazes for which he is renowned and his signature, vivid turquoise-blue barium glaze, followed in 1970. In 1967 he was Artist in Residence at the University of Sussex, and in 1976 Sir Roy Strong selected Derek and his fellow potter Mary Rogers to represent the "Spirit of the 70s" for an exhibition at the V&A assuring him a place alongside the likes of Lucie Rie and Ruth Duckworth as one of the most prominent potters of the decade. By the late 1970s, he was concentrating on hand-built pieces, decorated with themes of social comment.

 Claire Sutcliffe was another local potter with a studio in Nuthurst, near Horsham.  She trained at Wenford Bridge Pottery in Cornwall as Seth Cardew’s first student and worked in the Leach/Cardew tradition. 

 Douglas Zadek was another potter with local connections as he founded Cobham Pottery (Surrey Pottery Ltd), which ran from 1947 to 1956. A life long friend of Bernard Leach his work in coloured slip decorated earthenware reflects hints at a life spent at The Bauhaus and Leach Pottery in St Ives.

 The sale also includes works by; Seth Cardew, Michael O’Brien, Danlami Aliyu, Thibaut Chague, Eileen Lewenstein, Ruth Duckworth, Mike Dodd, Jim Malone and Emmanuel Cooper.

 The Studio Pottery sale will commence at 11am on Thursday 4 April with viewing from Friday 29 March - Thursday 4 April.
