May 2018 saw Bellmans host their biggest and most successful series of Auctions this year. The Fine Sale included many notable examples across all departments, including pictures, furniture, ceramics, silver, jewellery, clocks and many more, attracting audiences to the saleroom and over 32% via online bidding. This week being recognised by the ATG as having the most registered online bidders and recording over 1500 for this sale alone.
The Modern British pictures exceeded expectations, with particular mentions to Cecil Collins ‘Blue landscape and bird’ which fetched £4,392, along with Dorothea Sharp’s ‘Still life of mixed flowers’ which achieved £6,100, over double its estimate.
Exciting results continued on the second day, with the clock department’s bi-annual Fine auction. The sale comprised seventy clocks and barometers and saw some outstanding results. The top lot, a George III ormolu, Geneva enamel and paste set automaton timepiece with later movement, circa 1800, which carried a pre-auction estimate of £7,000-10,000, sold for £41,480 (Illustrated below). With a rare and unusual brass-bound rosewood two-day Royal Observatory Marine Chronometer by Charles Frodsham, London, also lighting up the room, selling for £9,760.
A late 19th century F. Kaim & Sohn Kirchheim-Stuttgart satinwood grand piano was a leading lot in the furniture sale, achieving £6,344. Shortly followed by a George III style mahogany library table, selling for £7,320, a copy of the eminent Thomas Chippendale’s library table for Nostell Priory.
The third day concluded with the jewellery sale, again realising some strong prices, delighting buyers and sellers alike. Leading the results was a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust 18ct white gold and diamond set lady's bracelet wristwatch, which surpassed its guide price, realising £7,442.
A fine collection of Victorian carbuncle garnet set jewellery (Lot 2301, 2305, 2385) sold collectively for £6,710. Along with signed pieces, always sought after, a gold mounted patinated copper bangle and earclips by the celebrated French jewellers Boucheron, realising £2,684.
