Disney Sketches & The Dean Publisher’s Archive

This December, Bellmans Sussex are excited to offer for sale a single owner archive of original publisher’s artwork, and a complementary single owner collection of animation sketches, both of which will go under the hammer on Wednesday 6th December at 1pm.

Dean & Son was a prolific publishing company which pioneered ‘pop-up’ and other novelty books in the 19th century; their many publications over the years have introduced thousands of children to the world of books.

The two collections include over thirty lots of original artwork, including items relating to Disney and other characters, with notable highlights including Lot 1429, an orange pencil production sketch of Jiminy Cricket from Pinocchio, which carries an auction estimate of £200-300, and Lot 1433, an animation sketch of Jerry Mouse catalogued as being “in jubilant dance mode!” which carries the original studio stamp and animator's studio designation, and which is expected to realise £150-200.

Ephemera specialist Denise Kelly enthuses that the collections “are for the big kid in all of us!” She continued: “This has been such a happy auction to work on; the Dean Publisher’s Archive is a really special, unusually large collection, and really illustrates the diversity of the items that the Bellmans team can handle”.

Consigned by two private local collectors, the Dean archive and animation sketches have estimates ranging from £120 to £400, meaning that any budget can take home a piece of nostalgic fun in time for Christmas.

The auction is on view from Friday 1st December, and will be fully illustrated online from Tuesday 28th November. Online bidding is available via For more information and to register your interest, please contact Bellmans Auctioneers directly on 01403 700858, or email Denise directly:
