The Auction

The Bellmans September auction is set to build on August’s strong post-lockdown return. Containing a wide variety of items from the genre-defining art of Picasso’s peer Georges Braque to a Victoria Jubilee head five pounds piece from 1887, this auction has a special focus on interiors and silver.

Tuesday 15th September

L'Ordre des oiseaux

Etching by Georges Braque (French, 1882-1963)

Estimate: Estimate: £5,000 - £8,000

An etching with aquatint, printed in colour. Dated 1962, it is signed in pencil and numbered 25/30. The piece was published by Au Vent d'Aris, Paris. Size 41cm x 52cm

Georges Braque was French painter, collagist, draughtsman, printmaker and sculptor. Associated with Fauvism and the development of Cubism, his work between 1908 and 1912 is closely associated with his colleague Pablo Picasso

Early 19th century Indian gold inlaid Tulwar sword

This Tulwar sword has a curved Damascened blade. The gold inlaid handle decorated with flowers and leaves. The sword is 94cm long.



Thursday 17th September

Set of three silver gilt lidded dishes and stands

Estimate: £2,000 - £3,000

A set of three silver gilt lidded dishes and stands. The larger of the dishes is decorated with birds, flowers and leaves to the finial of the detachable lid. The handles are decorated with floral patterns on a scalloped ground. The bases and stands have gadrooned borders. The two smaller dishes are decorated with fish and seashells to the finials of the detachable lids, the handles with floral decoration, on a scalloped ground. The bases and the stands are decorated with gadrooned borders.

The items come bearing false 18th century Moscow marks and date probably to the first half of the 20th century. Combined weight 6005 grams.

Victorian leather cased travelling tea set

A Victorian leather cased travelling tea set. This lot comprises two silver spoons (London 1876) and a silver lid with one glass jar (London 1873) (probably replacements). The remaining items are silver plated, including a flask detailed Spirits of Wine and two mugs with loop shaped ivory handles.

Asian shaped rectangular twin handled tray

Estimate: £800 - £1,200

An ornate Asian shaped rectangular twin handled tray. The central reserve is decorated with elephants bathing, with palm trees and buildings beyond. This sits within a surround of fruiting vine, which itself sits within a border decorated with birds and flowers. The shaped, pierced rim is decorated with fruiting vine and the handles having floral motifs. The tray is raised on four pierced feet. Probably Indian. Length 64cm, weight 2960 grams.



Edwardian diamond-set star brooch, converted to necklace

Estimate: £2,500 - £3,500

This is an Edwardian diamond-set star brooch that has been converted to a necklace. It is designed as a twelve rayed star set with nine cushion-cut diamonds of graduated design. The radiating star was later suspended from three strands of alternating small and larger cultured pearls, to an emerald set whiteprecious metal clasp, with box and tongue fitting.

Mabé cultured pearl and diamond-set pendent earrings

Estimate: £1,200 - £1,800

This lot is a pair of mabé cultured pearl and diamond-set pendent earrings. The floral spray earclips are set throughout with circular-cut diamonds, suspending two diamond set links, and pear shaped mabé pearl drops.

Victoria Jubilee head five pounds piece 1887

Estimate: £1,300 - £1,700

Lot: 2600

Issued by the Royal Mint in 1887, this gold five pound coin was produced for Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee.
