FINLAY MACKINNON (1870 - 1931) - an album of original WW1 watercolours. 46pp. 43 scenes, mostly 8cm. x 11cm, & 11cm. x 20cm., many captioned in pencil,on thin paper pasted to album pages, 16 line, pencil letter home pasted to front e/p, & captioned, pencil sketch of Neuve Chapelle pasted to back e/p; includes '4th Seaforths marching through Neuve Chapelle to trenches', 'daybreak of 10th German flashlights in distance', 'W. Windy Corner', 'Flanders in sunset' 'Gurkhas in lean to & dug out', 'Bethune, Richebourg, Beaumont Hamel & Festubert trenches', n.d. & unsigned; together with approx. 28 watercolours & 7 pencil sketches, (3 signed) include Scottish landscapes, mostly captioned, some dated 1909-1923, with a copy of HALDANE (Lieut-Col. M.M.) History of the Fourth Battalion the Seaforth Highlanders, illustrated by Captain Finlay Mckinnon.. * the artist born in Scotland, studied art in South Kensington, Paris & Italy, exhibited at the Royal Academy 1910 & 1911, he arrived in France with the 4th Battalion Nov, 1914, seeing action in the Battles of the Somme, including attacks on High Wood, the Battle of Ancre & the capture of Beaumont Hamel.
