Spring Fine Auction

After Louis-François Roubiliac; Sir Francis Bacon, 1st Lord Verulam (1561-1626), plaster, on a later veined white marble circular base, 79cm high. Illustrated

The original marble model of this bust is in the library of Trinity College, Dublin. This plaster version may well be the lost bust once at the Athenaeum Club, London. It was supplied to them by P. Sarti in 1830 and was intended as a pendant to their bust of Newton.

Condition report

Patches of large restoration to rim of socle. Losses and repaired damages throughout. Dirt ingress and areas of wear consistent with age. Bust attached to a later white marble plinth; cannot see the base.
