June Interiors Auction

Attributed to Joseph Nollekens, RA (1737-1823), Portrait bust of a gentleman in Roman style draperies, white marble, bearing later signature J. Nol(ns) RA 1814, approximately 56cms high, 45cms wide (weathered).

Provenance; Jeremy Maas Esq. and thence by descent. A letter from Maas to his wife undated, probably late 1960's, reads; "sorry to have burbled on about the busts. This is the bargain to end all bargains (I hope not literally). £1 each! ... it's all very exciting". Within the family the subject was always ascribed to Lord Onslow but it seems rather closer to Robert Stewart, 2nd Marquess of Londonderry (Lord Castlereagh).

Estimate £6,000 - £8,000
