An Indian green stained carved ivory 'Pepys' pattern chess set, mid 19th century, one side stained viridian green, the opposing side natural, each piece intricately carved with circular lotus bases and ovoid supports, sandwiched between lotus leaves. The Kings and Queens with similar pierced centres surmounted by crowns and turned finials, the Bishops with pierced mitres, the knights with arched horses heads, the rooks with inverted turrets surmounted by domed towers, the pawns with turned finials, the King 13.5cm high.

Condition report

The king measures 13.5cm high. Natural coloured chess pieces: The king has damage and repair at the collar just above the foot. Bishop has a loss to the edge of the collar just above the foot. Knight missing tip of one ear. Castle lacking two lotus palm points just above ovoid knop and there is a chip to crown on three pawns.
Viridian green chess pieces: The king has a small chip to the footrim and to a lotus petal at the midsection. Queen has several small chips to points and lotus petals. Castle lacking finial, other castle lacking tips of lotus petals to a section on the top rim, four pawns have hairline cracks through the bases.
