Christopher SAXTON - Norfolciae . . . 39 x 53cms., (single sheet), engraved by Cornelis de Hooghe, hand-coloured, decorated strapwork title & index of hundreds, scale dividers & bar, ships & monster at sea, within decorated border, 1574. * from Saxton's great atlas of England & Wales (published 1579), Norfolk being the first county to be surveyed & printed; working under the authority of the Queen & her chief minister William Cecil (Lord Burghley), the maps would be available as important military & administrative aids, the cartographer being appropriately assisted by local JPs & their 'trusted helpers'. Illustrated
some sl. stains & other mks., but mostly marginal, v. sl. loss at village of Elden (SW. of Thetford) & a few edge nicks / small tears, good early colouring.
