Bellmans Single Owner Collection from Amberley Castle – 22nd
February 10am.
Amberley Castle is located in the West Sussex village of Amberley
in the heart of the South Downs. In
1103 the site saw the construction of a
timber framed hunting lodge, built by Bishop Luffa of Chichester.
In
1140, Bishop
Seffridi replaced this with a stone manor house.
The
14th century saw
the construction of the fortified castle, embellished with towers, great
surrounding walls and a portcullis.
In
1893 the castle was sold to the 15th Duke of Norfolk, who resided at
the castle during the development of Arundel Castle.
In 1989 the Castle underwent a change of use and was converted into a luxury hotel.
The single owner collection included within the Bellmans
Three Day Antiques & Interiors sale comprises of suits of armour and
weaponry, including; stonebows, crossbows and broadswords.
The sale highlight; lot 1684 is a 20th century steel suit of armour raised on an oak base, reaching the height of 200cm, with an estimate at £1500 - £2000.
